there's little defense when confronted with
the reality that life is sometimes crushed and brushed aside
a tragedy revealed to each
that what's been hid behind the curtains
we are all broken and uncertain
all comfort flees in one great retreat
and the draught of nonchalance drowns
beneath the threatening loss
as we awake from our great mistake
we find the castles we've been building
are merely coffins filled with feelings

we breed defeat, it's in our genes
as we set our sights on gathering for ourselves a hollow feast
we fall so short of the promised hope
with the drug of numbness coursing
another empty form of coping

we feel betrayed when faced with the grave
and the promise that it holds that we are only visitors
and yet we cling to earthly things
all the while we are mistaken
that we are owed a life of greatness
